Meet Nyonyozi The Lady Emcee
Q: How old were you when u started doing music?
A: I started writing rhymes when I was twelve but never took it seriously. Started playing guitar at 15 and teaching myself to sing ka easy at about the same time.
Q: Who inspired you to do music?
A: I was influenced and inspired by two different parties from very different avenues. I would say the hip hop influence came from growing up around A LOT of 90’s 00’s rap/hip hop music, the likes of Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, etc. and the inspiration was a combination of my God-given creative ability, further enhanced by the awesomeness of Hillsong, Hillsong United, Brooke Fraser, Lecrae, Mars ILL, TX10 (CHH countdown on JCTV) as well as my relationship with Jesus Christ.
Q: What has been one of the coolest moments in your music career?
A: Meeting Ruyonga. It’s great to know you’re not alone in such a strange area of ministry.
Q: What has been your most embarrasing moment on stage?
A: Haven’t had anything life-threatening so far, thank the Lord!
Q: When writing ur songs do u go 2 a quite place, or u write from anywhere?
A: When writing songs, I try to capture that “bee” of a tune or lyric buzzing around in my brain by recording it or writing it down before it’s gone. I do this anywhere at any time, but when it comes to enlarging the song concept and really crafting it to a Michaelangelo sculpture, that requires a degree of isolation.
Q: How did u n ruyonga hookup?
A: I met him as a suprise organised by my brother one day, ’cause I had been itching to meet him. We got to working on “Battle Cry” the next day. God is good, isn’t He?
Q: Of all the songs you have written and sung, which one is your favourite and why?
A: That’s a hard question because I love all four tracks on my yet to be released EP called ‘Beginning’
Q: Do u come from a musical background as in parents doing music?
A: My maternal grandpa was a choir master, my dad was in the Budo band, and mum sang soprano in her high school choir. So yes, I suppose! Neither of them are anywhere near music now though.
