Create Systems to Help You Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year to you! A new year gives us an opportunity to start over. Every January we get to get to evaluate ourselves. We look back on what we were able to accomplish or failed to accomplish in the previous year.

A lot of us set resolutions concerning things we hope to achieve in the New Year. However, a number of us never get started on actualizing our resolutions.

Most of those who try to get started on their goals give up before they achieve what they set out to do in the first place.

Why does this happen? In my opinion, the main reason is that a lot of goal setters do not create a clearly defined process to attain their objectives.

They do not understand what it will take for them to actually get started on the journey towards reaching those goals. Imagine you are standing at point A on the bank of a mighty river and you want to cross over to point B.

You will need to develop a vehicle, a mechanism, a bridge, to get you to the other side. It is the same challenge you will face as you try to achieve your goals. After deciding on what you want to accomplish this year, you need to create a system to take you to your destination.

What is a system? A system is a particular way of doing things in order to achieve a desired result. In this article, the words system and process are used anonymously.

Someone who is serious about accomplishing their resolutions should immediately begin creating a system to fulfill those goals. These are some of the things an individual must consider as they design their system:

1. You must think about the impact the new process will have on the current activities of your life.

For example, your goal may be to lose 20 kilograms by the end of 2016. In your system design process, you may decide to take a 30 minute evening walk, 3 times a week, for the entire year.

Starting the new routine of walking 3 times a week will mean that you will have to sacrifice the activities that you used to do previously during that time.

2. This time period will be replaced by the new activity of walking in order to lose weight.

3. You should also ask yourself if you will require any equipment in order to achieve that goal. Using the example above, you have already noted that one of the activities in your system to lose 20 kilograms by the end of this year will be walking 3 times a week.

As you do your equipment assessment, you will realize that you need running shoes and possibly a track suit if you do not have one. If you are committed to achieving your resolutions you will go and buy yourself whatever equipment you need to achieve your goals.

For your system to be truly effective, you will have to create a method of measuring your progress. You can create an exercise calendar checklist for every week of the year, where you will mark off the days when you actually went walking.

Also, do research to find out if there are complimentary processes that can help you attain your goals. For example, you can research to find out other activities that can help you lose weight like eating a balanced diet and getting enough rest at night.

If you begin to take a systems approach towards goal fulfillment, these things will happen.  You will always get results because you have created a process to carry out certain activities repeatedly.

By designing a system to reach your resolutions, you will be able to decide from a point of knowledge if you truly want to follow a particular process, or if you would rather commit to something else.
